Oceanside's history begins at the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, the 18th mission of 21 missions in the California mission chain, which was built in 1798 and was founded by Father Lasuen. The mission, named for Louis IX of France, is known as the "King of Missions" because of its large size. The Nearby Camp Joseph H.
